Documents and saving
A document holds everything about your finances: accounts, transactions, schedules, budgets and its properties. It’s one file, with the extension .dovleentry, that you keep where you like and can copy, send or back up like any other file.
Opening
| Command | Keys | What it does |
|---|---|---|
| FileNew Document | Starts an empty document. | |
| FileOpen... | Ctrl+O | Opens a document from a file. |
| FileOpen Recent | Lists the documents you opened lately. Clear List empties it. | |
| FileOpen Example Document | Opens a document full of made-up transactions, to try things without risk. |
DovleEntry opens with the document you used last. Its tabs come back as you left them.
Saving
Ctrl+S saves the document in its file. The first time, or with FileSave As... (Ctrl+Shift+S), DovleEntry asks for a name and a place, and says so before replacing a file that exists.
While a document has changes that aren’t saved, a gold dot follows its name at the top left of the window. If you close the window, quit, or open another document before saving, DovleEntry asks what to do with them: Save, Discard them, or Cancel and go back to the document.
Files of moneyGuru
DovleEntry comes from moneyGuru, and opens its files, with the extension .moneyguru, as they are. A document opened from such a file is saved in it, so that moneyGuru can open it again. To make a copy for moneyGuru of a .dovleentry document, save it under a name that ends with .moneyguru.
DovleEntry was called DoubleLeaf before. It opens the documents of then, with the extension .doubleleaf, and saves them where they are.
Copies on the side
Every few minutes, DovleEntry saves a copy of the open document in a folder of its own, without touching your file: the last ten copies are kept. If your computer stops before you saved, the most recent copy has your work. On Windows, the copies are in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Dovleentry\Cache, named autosave followed by a number. Open one with FileOpen..., then save it under a name of yours.
How often the copies are made is set in the preferences: every 10 minutes unless you change it, never if you set it to 0.
What stays on your computer
Some things are not in the document but on your computer, for each document: its tabs, and the accounts you excluded from the totals. DovleEntry also remembers the date range you used last, the widths and the order of the columns, and your preferences. On Windows, they are in %APPDATA%\Dovleentry.
